Top Twitter Trends (5th – 11th June 2017)

The Top 10 Twitter Trends in Ireland from last week (5th June – 11th June 2017) are summarized below.

 

 

1. #GE2017

The British general election took place on Thursday. Prime Minister Theresa May called for the snap election which resulted in a hung parliament and a hung-up Twitter.

2. #LeavingCert

The Leaving Certification a.k.a. the final exam for Irish secondary schools took place last week. Students took to Twitter in preparation for the exam, and to vent about it afterwards.

 

3. #FeministsAreEverywhere

The National Women’s Council of Ireland held a discussion on women rights on Thursday right here in Dublin. Guest speakers, such as feminist Frances Fitzgerald, led the discussion on the challenges women face, and tweets poured in regarding the topic.

 

4. #Qatar

Several Arab states have cut travel, diplomatic and economic ties with Qatar earlier this week in response to the concern that the state is supporting Islamic terrorism. Qatar’s economy will suffer greatly from the blockade if nothing is done, however Iran has already stepped up and sent food to Qatar.

 

5. #OITNB

The finale of Orange is the New Black premiered this week. The episode was rumored to be quite emotional for fans to watch, not to mention that the episode ended with a cliff-hanger. Fans must now wait at least a year to find out what happens next.

 

6. #CRUvBIL

On Saturday the Lions beat the Crusaders in what pundits had billed as their toughest test of the tour to date. Next up, they play the Highlanders.

 

7. #OneLoveManchester

Last Sunday singer Ariana Grande held the benefit concert One Love Manchester honoring the victims of the Manchester terrorist attack. The following week fans tweeted videos and pictures of the event raising even more money.

 

8. #BBUK

Big Brother UK began its new season on Monday. Fans were shocked at a new twist to the rules this season. Contestant Tom Barber was voted as the People’s Housemate and he now has access to social media. Twitter blew up with input about the episode.

 

9. #Austria

The Republic of Ireland played Austria in a crucial World Cup Qualifier on Sunday. A late Jonathan Walters strike gave the home side a draw and maintained their unbeaten run. Next up for Martin O’Neill’s men is Georgia in September.

 

10. #LoveIsland

Another television show trended on Twitter this week…

The third season of Love Island launched on Monday. The popular game show gives contestants a chance to find love while on an island with several other couples. Tweets flowed in during the exciting first show.
