Twitter Top 10 Trends Ireland: 06/06/16-12/06/16

Each week Olytico tracks the trending topics on Twitter in Ireland and across the globe. Here’s the Top 10 Trends in Ireland from the week ending June 12th 2016.

 

1. #SWDub

Startup Weekend Dublin took place in the Google HQ last weekend. The 54-hour event is designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs. Participants created working startups during the event and were able to collaborate with like-minded individuals outside of their daily networks. Home Grow Hero was the winning startup “a compact, outdoor, smart grow box to help anyone grow their own veg.”

 

2. #MTVAwardsStar

MTV Italy’s award show takes place on June 19 in Florence, Italy. It started the hashtag #MTVAwardsStar so their viewers could vote for their favourite star by tweeting the hashtag alongside the name of their choice. MTV Italy selected 50 artists for Twitter users to choose from. Irish fans were busy tweeting their favourite artists with a strong One Directioner presence.

 

3. #WorldRugbyU20s

The Irish Under-20s Rugby team won their first ever match against the Under-20s All Black team on Saturday in the Under-20s World Cup. The final score was 33 – 24 to the Irish squad and needless to say the Irish Twitter population was very proud.

 

4. #GPC16

The Green party had their annual convention in Cork last weekend. Attendees gathered to debate “A People’s Republic?”, listen to speakers and participate in workshops.

 

5. #RTEPT

RTÉ’s Primetime was trending last week with homelessness and abortion issues among the topics discussed on Twitter.

 

6. #Martin O’Neill

Irish football manager Martin O’Neill extended his contract with the Ireland team for a further two years last week. O’Neill also apologised for the potentially homophobic comments he made the week before which stirred further reactions on Twitter.

 

7. #TJ16

Labour Youth’s Tom Johnson Summer School kicked off on Friday. This year’s theme was
“Re-examining the Republic”. Labour party members and attendees live tweeted about debates, talks and workshops all weekend.

 

8. #Marseille

England and Russia competed in their opening match in the Euros in Marseille on Saturday. The match ended in a draw but a lot of the Twitter chat revolved around the hooliganism and riots post match.

 

9. #RSAvIRE

The Irish rugby team made history last weekend beating the Springboks on South African soil for the first time ever. The final score was 26 – 20 to Ireland. Devin Toner was awarded man of the match which he dedicated to his Dad.

10. #FullyCharged

Spin’s radio show Fully Charged trended last week with listeners guessing what was hidden in the Fully Charged mystery box.
