Twitter Top 10 Trends Ireland: 07/03/16-14/03/16

Each week Olytico tracks the trending topics on Twitter in Ireland and across the globe. Here’s the Top 10 Trends in Ireland from the week ending March 14th 2016 – based on the total time the term trended.

 

1. #YouDoTheMaps – (trended for 3.5 days)

Today FMs popular treasure hunt based competition ran last week and gave participants the chance to win €10,000 each day between Monday 7th March and Friday 11th March. Clues – in the form of directions on Google maps – were given across daily radio shows which perspective winners had to then solve in order to be in with a chance of winning the prize. Once the clues had been solved, the participants sent their entry to Today FM via text message and the winner was announced on The Last Word with Matt Cooper.

 

 

2. #AllianzLeagues – (trended for 41 hours)

Some big games took place over the weekend in the national hurling and football leagues but none more thrilling than that of Kilkenny v Cork which went right down to the wire, with the cats winning by a single point. Coming from six points down with a few minutes to the final whistle, Kilkenny substitute John Power took full advantage of a bad puck out by the Cork goalkeeper to give his side the win.

 

3. #IWD2016 – (trended for 40 Hours)

On Tuesday the 8th of March, the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women all over the world was celebrated on International Women’s Day. The day also marked a call to action that asks everyone to pledge to accelerating gender parity in the world.

With the forthcoming Easter Rising centenary celebrations, @Ireland2016 recognised all of the women who played a part in the 1916 Easter rising with this tweet:

 

 

4. #Dail – (trended for 38 hours)

After a short election campaign, the Dáil returned last week. After nominations for Taoiseach had been heard it was clear no leader would receive a majority and ultimately Enda Kenny would have to resign as Taoiseach. He will remain in a caretaker capacity until such a time that a new Taoiseach is elected.

 

5. #OCCup – (trended for 36 hours)

The O Connor Cup was much more than two sides facing each other this year, it was twin sisters facing each other on opposing teams. The final took place in Tralee with Nicola Ward playing for UCD and Louise playing for UL. UCD emerged victorious, with Nicola scoring the only goal in the game to narrowly defeat the Limerick university, winning their first cup since 2006.

 

6. #Luas – (trended for 36 hours)

The ongoing pay dispute between Transdev and its Luas drivers caused it to be one of the top trends this week. The threatened action for St Patricks Day, if it goes ahead, may cost Dublin upwards of €50 million and cause widespread disruption to the festivities in the capital.

 

 

7. #AldiTheRestaurant – (trended for 23 hours)

The Restaurant is a television show that airs on TV3, which is sponsored this year by Aldi. Each week a celebrity is tasked with putting together a three course meal for a full restaurant that includes some well-known food critics. This week, it was the turn of Model and TV personality Pippa O Connor. Aldi also ran a competition in conjunction with the airing of the show.

 

 

8. #galwayfashiontrail – (trended for 23 hours)

As part of Galway Fashion Week, 30 fashion bloggers took part in the #galwayfashiontrail. The event saw some of the city’s leading fashion retailers host fashion shows, each of which included at least one local designer’s works, with many of the bloggers who are part of the ITWBN network sharing the fashion and adventures of the trail online through pictures and tweets.

 

 

9. #KOTBD – (trended for 22 hours)

Author Dave Rudden released his new book Knights of the Borrowed Dark last week. The launch was held in Dublin’s Smock Alley Theatre, where the author read excerpts and signed copies of the newly published book.

 

10. #LegendBoy – (trended for 22 hours)

Bunnies began appearing on national TV and billboards along with the #LegendBoy hashtag as people speculated about the brand behind the campaign. Later in the week it was revealed #LegendBoy is a campaign from the National Lottery which aims to raise awareness around its new money multiplier scartchcards.
