The Marian Finucane show on RTÉ radio one was trending a couple of times this week with listeners tweeting dissenting and agreeing opinions on controversial topics such as gangland crime, saving for a house deposit and Airbnb hosting using the popular #marian.

Irish boxing hero and Olympic champion Katie Taylor qualified for the Rio Olympics 2016 after winning her quarter-final match against Mexico’s Victoria Torres at the Women’s Boxing World Championships. Katie was subsequently beaten in the semi-final by France’s Estelle Mossely on a spilt decision.

American fiction writer @pronouced_ing started #scalebackabook after being inspired by a bad dream that her book ‘Everything I Never Told You’ would be re-titled. The hashtag quickly took off after renowned publishers and writers such as Penguin Random house, Chronicle Books, Margaret Atwood and E.L. James jumped on the bandwagon. Even though the hashtag started in America the Irish contingent soon joined in on the conversation with some particularly inventive modified titles.

The Defence Forces cleaned up at the Social Media Awards in the RDS on Wednesday night winning four social media awards including the overall grandprix award. Public service organisations were well represented, with Dublin Fire Brigade and Iarnród Éireann also among the winners. Lidl, Supervalu, Aer Lingus and HB Ice Cream were among the big brands to take awards.
