Each week Olytico tracks the trending topics on Twitter in Ireland and across the globe. Here’s the Top 10 Trends in Ireland from the week ending May 29th 2016.

 

1. #CuttingEdge

Brendan O’Connor returned to our screens this month with his new panel show ‘Brendan O’Connor’s Cutting Edge’. The tweeters of Ireland responded positively last week, praising the topical and honest discussion around parenting, gang related crime and counselling in particular.

 

2. #TheStoryofYes

RTÉ’s moving documentary marking the first anniversary of the marriage equality referendum in Ireland was shown Monday on RTÉ2.

3. #UCLFinal/ Ronaldo

The UEFA Champions League Final saw Real Madrid narrowly beat Atletico Madrid in a penalty shoot-out with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the winning goal and Irish fans vocally celebrating and commiserating on Twitter.

 

4. #Marian

The Marian Finucane show on RTÉ radio one was trending a couple of times this week with listeners tweeting dissenting and agreeing opinions on controversial topics such as gangland crime, saving for a house deposit and Airbnb hosting using the popular #marian.

 

5. #Katie Taylor

Irish boxing hero and Olympic champion Katie Taylor qualified for the Rio Olympics 2016 after winning her quarter-final match against Mexico’s Victoria Torres at the Women’s Boxing World Championships. Katie was subsequently beaten in the semi-final by France’s Estelle Mossely on a spilt decision.

 

6. #BruceSpringsteen

160,000 fans were dancing in the park and tweeting their praise this weekend to the sound of The Boss, Bruce Springsteen in a sold out Croke Park.

 

7. #IBBA16

The Irish Beauty Blog Awards 2016 took place in Lillie’s Bordello on Thursday evening. Naturally many attending bloggers live tweeted event updates. Big winners of the night included SoSueMe.ie for best design blog, Pippa.ie for best fashion blog and MakeUpFairy.ie for best beauty blog.

 

8. #ScaleBackaBook

American fiction writer @pronouced_ing started #scalebackabook after being inspired by a bad dream that her book ‘Everything I Never Told You’ would be re-titled. The hashtag quickly took off after renowned publishers and writers such as Penguin Random house, Chronicle Books, Margaret Atwood and E.L. James jumped on the bandwagon. Even though the hashtag started in America the Irish contingent soon joined in on the conversation with some particularly inventive modified titles.

 

9. #Overwatch

‘’In a time of global crisis, an international task force of heroes banded together to restore peace to a war-torn world: OVERWATCH’’ is a new game that was released last week on PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One and people are going crazy for it.

 

10. #Sockies16

The Defence Forces cleaned up at the Social Media Awards in the RDS on Wednesday night winning four social media awards including the overall grandprix award. Public service organisations were well represented, with Dublin Fire Brigade and Iarnród Éireann also among the winners. Lidl, Supervalu, Aer Lingus and HB Ice Cream were among the big brands to take awards.
