Watsi – saving lives through crowd funding

At Olytico we live connected lives. We work, play, shop and sometimes even socialize online and while this digital lifestyle can broaden horizons in many ways it can also insulate us from the real world.

We try to guard against that by meeting our customers, friends and partners face to face, getting involved with business networks or just taking a stroll around the park outside our office but recently we started chatting about doing a little, you know… good.

We recalled a recent Facebook post from our friend Jonathan Shimmin, who recently founded Spoon Cereals (the best Granola you’ll ever taste) about Watsi, a global crowdfunding platform that enables anyone to donate as little as $5 to directly fund life-changing healthcare for people in need.

In the comments below Jonathan’s post on Facebook, other friends also pledged to donate to Watsi (Dhiraj had fractured his arm, and needed a cast).

Inspired by the idea, we talked in the Olytico office about the Watsi platform, and decided that we wanted to help fund a Watsi patient each month.

For September, we have helped fund Gina from Haiti. She was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and the money raised will help fund her treatment. Gina’s case was submitted by Project Medishare.

We will post each month about the person we are helping. Perhaps you might like to check out Watsi or think about how your team or company might support real people in the real world.
