The 2016 Etihad Airways GAA World Games are taking place at UCD’s Belfield campus between the 7th and 14th of August. There are 57 teams competing in the Etihad Airways GAA World Games across 8 different competitions in Hurling, Football, Camogie and Ladies Football with the finals being played at Croke Park later this week.
While everyone at Team Olytico loves their GAA, we are also very interested in understanding how sponsored competitions perform online. The official hashtag for the competition (#gaaworldgames) has already gained significant traction online with 3,087,156 impressions and 636,799 accounts reached on Twitter in the last 10 days.
The top contributor so far has been the GAA official handle with 1,422,220 impressions but as a result of the geographic appeal of the competition, some of the other top contributors have come from across the globe. These include the Camino Ways – 308,379 impressions, Europe Gaa – 290,340 impressions, and Manhattan Gaels – 23,442 impressions.
From our online media analysis to date (10/8/2016), 583 tweets have been shared using the official hashtag from 275 unique contributors. In total there will be over 300 matches played over the course of the Etihad Airways GAA World Games so as we move towards the finals at the end of the week, we would expect to see these numbers to continue to grow.
Admission is free to the week-long festival of games in both UCD and Croke Park and more information can be found here.
