A disappointing day for Irish rugby as Scotland beat Ireland in the Six Nations opener. Despite an impressive comeback from Ireland in the second-half, Scotland claimed the win 27-22. This is the first time Scotland won their opening match of the tournament since 2006.

4. #AllianzLeagues
Week one of the Allianz Leagues football and hurling games kicked off last weekend. Dublin won by 7 points over Cavan while Kerry claimed the win by one goal against Donegal. Despite an early goal by Roscommon’s Niall Daly, Tyrone finished six points ahead, winning the game. Fans of the GAA took to Twitter to post excited game-day tweets and behind the scene photos.

Beyonce took to Instagram to announce she is pregnant with twins, captioning the post with “We have been blessed two times over.” The announcement caused an explosion of social media posts from excited fans. Some also say that Beyonce releasing the news on February 1st was symbolically celebrating the start of Black History Month.

First Dates Ireland returned to television for its second season. AIB’s documentary The Toughest Trade showcased Alex Auld in a hurling match between Faythe Harriers and St. Martin’s. Auld is a Canadian ice hockey star but for The Toughest Trade he is putting his athletic ability to the test as an Irish hurling player. Rumors are spreading around Twitter about who else will be involved in The Toughest Trade this year with footballer Michael Murphy from Donegal supposedly playing rugby in France. The documentary is due to release in March.

Author Sebastian Barry won the 2016 Costa Book of the Year for his novel Days Without End. The novel is a fiction rooted in both Irish and American history and portrays an unconventional love story between two soldiers. Dedicated to his son, the novel sparked a lot of pride from Irish fans who took to Twitter to congratulate the author.
