1. #DalkeyBookFest
Dalkey Book Festival took place last weekend, with a great line-up of speakers including: author of The Tipping Point and Blink, Malcolm Gladwell; actor, Michael Gambon; and Irish singer and philanthropist, Bob Geldof. The festival was set up by economist David McWilliams and his wife Sian Smyth in 2010 and it was once described by Salman Rushdie as “the best little festival in the world”.

2. #COYBIG
We had jam packed weekend of sport last weekend with both the Irish rugby and football teams fighting for glory. The Irish rugby team were beaten in their second test match against South Africa on Saturday, the final score was 32 – 26 to the Springboks. At the Euros, Martin and Roy’s boys took on Belgium and were defeated 3- 0. On Twitter there was as big a focus on Irish fan behaviour as there was on the actual match.

3. #Bordeaux
Bordeaux was the venue for the Ireland v Belgium match on Saturday and as a result it featured prominently in fan tweets. As above Irish fan content featured dominantly on Twitter.

4. #Brexit
As the Brexit referendum looms the conversation among the Irish on Twitter was centered around the impact the UK leaving the EU will have on us.

5. #Orlando
On Sunday 12th June 2016, 50 people were killed and another 53 injured at a LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida. It was the largest mass shooting in American history. #Orlando began trending in Ireland on Tuesday last week as the Irish public gathered in grief and support to remember the victims of the tragedy.

Taste of Dublin ran all weekend in the Iveagh gardens showcasing Irish food and drink producers, restaurants and chefs. Attendees enjoyed musical performances, cookery demonstrations and of course delectable food.

Social housing and waste disposal were hot topics on Tonight with Vincent Browne last week, creating conversation on Twitter around the VinB hashtag.

9. #AIMS2016
The Association of Irish Musical Societies hosted their annual awards night in the INEC in Killarney last weekend. Overall winners were Harold’s Cross Tallaght Musical Society who won best overall show with an Irish premiere of URINETOWN and they also scooped awards for Best Director, Eoin Cannon; Best Ensemble piece; and Best Comedian, Damien Hurley for his portrayal of the character Officer Lockstock.

10. #RoyalAscot
There was a record 10 Irish trained winners at Britain’s most valuable horse racing meeting; Royal Ascot last week. The meeting was indeed royal as the Queen herself had a winner with Dartmouth in the Hardwicke Stakes. Fashion commentary was rife on Twitter with special attention given to some unusual headpieces.
