Twitter Top 10 Trends Ireland: 29/02/16-07/03/16

Each week Olytico tracks the trending topics on Twitter in Ireland and across the globe. Here’s the Top 10 Trends in Ireland from the week ending March 7th 2016 – based on the total time the term trended.

1. #MothersDay – (trended for just under 4 days)

Mothers Day is a special day across the globe. On Sunday, March 6th, Ireland celebrated its’ thousands of mothers with flowers, cards, chocolates, and competitions. Brands across Ireland ran promotions and competitions around Mothers Day.

For example, UTV Ireland partnered with ALDI to give people a chance to win an ALDI gift voucher for someone special.

2. #ihf2016 – (trended for just under 3 days)

The 2016 Irish Hotels Federation Annual Conference and Trade Exhibition – Showtel took place in the Gleneagle Hotel & INEC in Killarney, Co. Kerry between Monday February 29th and Tuesday March 1st.

Showtel is also a great opportunity to raise your company’s profile to a target audience which includes property owners, general managers, key industry personnel and affiliate industry representatives.” (

3. #HouseOfCards – (trended for 2 and half days straight)

On March 4th, a brand new season of House of Cards went live on Netflix – 23 episodes. Countless Twitter users expressed their excitement of the release of season 4.

“Real-life presidential politics have caught up with “House of Cards,” giving the drama that helped put Netflix on the programming map a run for its money in sheer outlandishness. The series, however, looks determined to prove it can still one-up the legitimate article, an approach that has made the show consistently juicy and entertaining, but also produced questionable, over-the-top flourishes, including a few whoppers in the first half of the program’s fourth campaign. While already renewed for a fifth season, the show’s highest approval numbers are probably at this point behind it.” (Variety)

4. #UFC196 – (trended for just over 2 days)

On Saturday, March 5th, the UFC 196 fight took place in Las Vegas. Following a few scuffles and staredowns between the press conference and weigh in, Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz hashed it out. Ireland’s McGregor found a step from featherweight to welterweight too much, losing by submission to Diaz on a night of upsets.

5. #SMSummitIRL – (trended for almost 2 days)

The Social Media Summit of 2016 was held on the 1st and 2nd of March at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Speakers from all corners of the globe attended the summit.

6. Dublin Writers – (trended for almost 2 days)

The Dublin Writers Conference is taking place from June 24th to the 26th this year and according to the conference website, the event booked out last year. With the event being under 3 months away, there was a surge of conversation on Twitter last week.

7. Leicester – (trended for just under 2 days)

On Saturday, March 5th, Leicester beat Watford 1-0.

Leicester manager, Claudio Ranieri told his Leicester players that “every match is a final” after they extended their Premier League lead on Saturday. Leicester defeated Watford 1-0 to move on to 60 points, five more than nearest rivals Tottenham, with nine games left.

“We are running for something special,” said Ranieri, whose side have only lost three times in 29 league games this season, winning 17. (BBC)

8. #AdeleDublin – (trended for 23 hours) 

On Saturday, March 5th, Adele performed at Dublin’s 3 Arena alongside singers Ronan Scolard and Glenn Murphy, “who just days previously went viral online after posting a video of them performing some of her biggest hits.” (RTE)

The duet video of them singing a medley of Adele’s singles went viral and at her second sold-out gig at the 3 Arena she invited the guys on stage to perform with her. She left the audience in awe with her emotional and moving performance.

9. #Seanad16 – (trended for about 23 hours)

On March 2nd, former minister for justice and leader of the Progressive Democrats Michael McDowell, announced that he was running in the Seanad elections. McDowell will be running on the National University of Ireland panel which will elect three members of the incoming Seanad. (Irish Examiner)

“There have to be sweeping changes in how the Seanad is elected. The report showed how this could be done without the necessity of a referendum and I will be campaigning to ensure that the report is implemented,” said McDowell. (Irish Times)

10. #Ghostbusters – (trended for 21 hours)

On Thursday, March 4th, Sony unveiled the first trailer for its new Ghostbusters.

“The trailer for the July 15 release starts with a scene that echoes the 1984 original: In a library, paranormal researcher Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), particle physicist Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and eccentric nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) — the inventor behind their tech — approach a female ghost, which answers with a torrent of ectoplasm.” (Variety)
